Why is Wax Applied to Apples?
Apples are waxed for a variety of reasons. The wax coating not only enhances the appearance, but also maintains freshness, reduces moisture loss and guards against contamination.
Wax sources are mainly food grade petroleum products or natural products such as plants. Extensive research has shown that food grade wax is safe and does not break down or absorb into the body when ingested. This same clear wax coats candy bars and although it may turn white when exposed to extreme temperatures, it remains perfectly safe to eat.
